Hydra
Greek mythology tells the tales of Hydra, the giant serpent-like monster with eight mortal heads and one immortal head in the center. The hero Hercules cut off the heads, then his nephew took a torch to cauterize the wounds and keep the heads from growing back. Alas, the center head could not be killed. Hercules cut the final head off with the golden sword of Athena and buried the writing head under a rock.
